What’s your name?
James Henry Spyt
What is your job role?
Head of the Support Team / 3rd Line Support Technician
When did you join Focus?
What are the 3 main roles you are involved in at Focus Micro Systems?
• Technical Support – I manage the support team and make sure that support jobs are processed to a high level and in a timely manner to meet our customer’s needs. I deal with complex queries and tasks that have been escalated from other members of the team which require extensive knowledge and experience. As part of support, I run online, in house and on-site training sessions teaching our customers everything they need to know about our software.
• Software Testing – I make sure our products are fit for purpose and any bugs or issues are removed before release. This involves creating detailed issue reports to make sure all reported issues get fixed by our developers. Further to this, I plan and run group testing sessions to make sure features are stress tested in larger groups.
• Presenting Webinars – I organise and run regular live webinar sessions. These sessions focus on a wide range of topics to help our customers gain a greater understanding and knowledge base of our products. This involves detailed planning to ensure that relevant data is used, the webinar focuses on the exact topic and that the sessions run smoothly.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Away from the office, I like to keep busy. I volunteer for two charities, one who work with children and young adults with special needs and one which is a befriending service for the elderly. I am sports mad and if I am not doing charity volunteering you will either find me on the archery range shooting arrows or I will be watching one of the many sports I enjoy. I bake too and often bring in cakes to the office for everyone to munch on and I enjoy watching Great British Bake Off on TV.
What do you like the most about working at Focus Micro Systems?
I enjoy working at the company as my senior’s care about me as a person and about my professional growth. There is a genuine spirit of cooperation and shared goals all revolving around helping our customers, which I feel is very important. You are always well looked after working at Focus.
What’s your background?
I was born in Leicester and lived there for 3 years before my parents split. I moved to Scotland with my mum and sister where I grew up and where I graduated from the University of St Andrews (third oldest university in the UK) with a degree in Computer Science. My previous job before working at Focus was for another Oxford based company who help financial institutions, enterprises, and regulators to meet the challenges of regulatory and business reporting. My role there involved consultancy work where I had a mix of working in the office and spending weeks at a time on site.
What’s your favourite film?
How do you start your day?
I believe that a healthy body results in a healthy mind so I like to make sure I start my day right. This will include a fully body stretch to relax my muscles and a number of press ups and sit ups to get me going. During the weekend, I like to go on a morning run to clear my thoughts and get my exercise in. I also believe that eating breakfast is important and so I like to have a bowl of porridge mixed with some fruit as it is a heathy way to start the day.
What’s one thing that surprised you about working at Focus Micro Systems?
When I first joined Focus Micro Systems, I found it amazing how most internal products the company uses have been built in house by the company developers. This includes our own CRM system and Mailing facility all which have been designed, built and adapted over the years to suit the ever-changing needs of the business. It forever reminds me of the talent of those in the company past and present.
